THE MOTHERFUCKER WITH THE HAT (THEATRE)

The Motherfucker with the Hat

The Motherfucker with the Hat

Struggles with addiction, friendship, love and the challenges of adulthood are at the centre of the story.

Set in New York, the play is a funny fast-paced foul-mouthed story about feuding childhood sweethearts. Newly released from prison and struggling to remain sober, Jackie has reunited with his longtime girlfriend, a crack-smoking live wire named Veronica. Jackie leans on his addiction sponsor, the mellow-talking, stay positive Ralph D who tries to keep Jackie from blowing up, but ultimately proves himself to be a very poor adviser indeed. Meanwhile, Ralph is having his own challenges with his ‘in-recovery’, ball-busting wife Victoria who sees Ralph for the dog he really is. Outside this maze of addiction and recovery stands Jackie’s loyal cousin, Julio who agrees to help Jackie in his quest for revenge despite a history of Jackie’s ill and often hurtful treatment of him.

★★★★ The Mail on Sunday
“A remarkable performance at breath-taking pace by the cast of five…”

★★★★ The Irish Times
“Has the energy and attention to detail for this hyperkinetic comedy of struggle, suspicion and support in contemporary America… a Production of high ambition..”

★★★★★ The Public Reviews
“By all rights this praise should be followed by a criticism, but it is almost impossible to find one. The set changes from middle-class apartment to drug den and back with ease, largely due to the force of the acting, and the inter-scene music is terrific. This is as close to flawless as theatre gets!”

The Sunday Times
“A production which has humour, grit and tension .. Impressive performances .. top notch .. satisfying night at the theatre”
